The Competition Commission organized a prize giving ceremony in the context of the National Contest for Students on 8th September 2014 at the BPML Conference Centre in Ebene. The ceremony was attended by Dr. The Honourable Vasant Bunwaree, Minister of Education and Human Resources, and Dr. the Honourable Rajesh Jeetah, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, Research & Technology.
The ceremony was an occasion for the CCM to reward the efforts of the students who participated in the national contest, which saw 42 teams battle it out for the first prize. The first prize for the Secondary School Category went to Dr Maurice Curé State College, the second prize for Secondary School Category went to Sodnac State Secondary School. For the Tertiary level category, the first prize went to Charles Telfair Institute. There was also a Special Jury Award, for best presentation skills and this went to Forest Side (Girls) State Secondary School.
In their addresses, both Minister Bunwaree and Minister Jeetah congratulated the students for their efforts and reminded the students of the importance of having a competitive economy. For her part, Mrs. Kiran Meetarbhan, Executive Director of the CCM commended the students for the high quality of essays that were submitted.
The winners of the first prize were given an Ipad each together with a certificate of participation, books and a shield for their respective institutions. The second prize winner received a cheque of Rs. 5000 each together with a certificate of participation, books and a shield for the college. There was also a Special Jury Award, whereby the winners were offered a Samsung smartphone each together with a certificate of participation, books and a shield for the college.
In view of the successful first edition of the contest, the CCM will reiterates its commitment to hold the national contest in the next academic year.
