The Competition Commission (the “CCM”), on the occasion of its 5th anniversary, organised an Annual Conference dinner and hosted the International Competition Network (ICN) Advocacy Workshop.
The 5th Annual Conference dinner held at L’Aventure du Sucre, Beau Plan, Pamplemousses on 5th November 2014 also served as a welcoming dinner for foreign delegates attending the ICN Advocacy workshop. It offered an opportunity to the CCM to share and review the first five years of CCM’s enforcement and advocacy work in the presence of key stakeholders from the business and legal communities.
In her speech, the Executive Director, Mrs. Kiran Meetarbhan stated that some 28 investigations and no less than 150 enquiries have been launched, the most important breakthrough being the imposition of financial penalties totalling approximately 1 million USD upon two enterprises in respect of a cartel conduct in the breweries industry in Mauritius. She added that, ‘It may have taken the CCM five years before receiving its first leniency application in a cartel case, but we do not intend to rest on our laurels: the detection and investigation of collusive agreements will remain a top priority for the CCM.’
Mr Bruno Lasserre, President of the French Autorité de la Concurrence was our keynote speaker for this event. In his address to our distinguished invitees, he raised several pertinent competition issues.
