The COMESA Competition Commission, in collaboration with the Competition Commission, hosted  the third COMESA Regional Judges Workshop at Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel under the theme “The Role of Competition and Consumer Protection Regulation in Economic Development”. Chief Justices, Deputy Chief Justices, Supreme Court and High Court Judges from the 21 Member States of the COMESA, including Mauritius, attended the two-day workshop.
The Executive Director of the Competition Commission, Mr Deshmuk Kowlessur, delivered a welcome address which was followed by introductory remarks on the Workshop objectives from Dr Willard Mwemba, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the COMESA Competition Commission.
The Honourable Maneesh Gobin, Attorney General and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, delivered the keynote address.
Competition experts from different parts of the globe will be interacting with respected members of the Judiciary on key themes such as the role of competition policy and law in economic development, the importance of economic evidence in competition law enforcement, and the interface between the multinational treaties and national laws.

On  3rd October 2024, the COMESA Competition Commission and the Competition Commission, in collaboration with the Institute for Judicial and Legal Studies (IJLS), hosted a half day workshop at Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel on the theme “Enhancing Law Practitioners’ Understanding of Competition Law“.
The welcome remarks were delivered by: Mr Vipin Naugah, Head Investigations at the Competition Commission and Chairperson of the COMESA Competition Commission, Dr Willard Mwemba, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the COMESA Competition Commission and Mrs Luvishka Seejore-Biltoo, Director of the IJLS.
Dr Mwemba was our first speaker and delved into Competition law and enforcement in the COMESA Region followed by Dr Babatunde Irukera, Former Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Commission of Nigeria, who shared his insights on “Best practices for Handling Competition Law Cases”.
Professor Richard Whish, KC, Professor at King’s College London, unravelled the latest developments and trends in Competition law enforcement in EU and UK.
The Workshop presented a unique occasion for interactive discussions with competition experts on the practical of competition law enforcement at national and regional level while benefitting from latest insights on landmark competition cases from EU and UK.
